You may have read through some of our blogs where we discuss the different types of smart locks that we have available for a range of industries and applications. However, you may be wondering what a smart lock actually is and what it does.

What is a smart lock?

A smart lock is a device that is attached to a door or similar surface that performs the same function as a traditional lock, but the lock is controlled through wifi or remotely from another location. Whilst some smart locks are installed for you to open with a code that is generated through a system, others can be used by the administrator to look after the locks with an RFID system. The lock still requires the two elements that make up a traditional lock: the lock itself and the key. The difference with smart locks is that the “key” is a code or a special key fob, such as a card. The diversity of the smart locks means that there are many ways that they can be used and each locking system has its advantages that make it ideal for your specific needs and requirements.

How secure are smart locks?

Just like with a traditional lock and key, smart locks are very safe and ensure the security of your possessions, personal documents and medications alike. For example, the access code managed locks use unique codes that can be generated for each person who uses the locker, which change whenever a new user types in their generated code. Smart locks also allow notifications which tell you when someone accesses a lock, so you know who should and shouldn’t have gained access. These locks are for ensuring security whilst adding a contemporary touch to your application.

What type of technology makes a smart lock?

Whilst there are different ways a smart lock can be used, Lowe & Fletcher manufacture three: app managed, live web managed and access code managed. Each type of lock uses a specific method to ensure security:

  • App managed: using RFID cards, your users can access their locks without you needing to be on site. Set up a customer account to organise users, configure settings and manage access. If any changes are made, they are logged within the app so you know who’s card and locks have been affected.
  • Live web managed: give access to a smart lock remotely in one place. This system gives you the ability to set up notifications, respond to any issues and review log files, so you know what is happening with your locks at any time.
  • Access code managed: when you purchase this system from us, we will set up a customer account for you and assign your locks to you. All your customers have to do is use a website to manage their lock access.
